Caring Community Challenge

The UpSocial Caring Communities Challenge was launched by the Balsam Foundation and UpSocial in early 2020. In the midst of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, the Challenge asked the question: how can we look after each other better in the places where we live, work and play?

The call was answered by Unison Health and Community Services Bathurst and Finch Hub. Partnering with the Hub enabled us to benefit from years of engagement with the local community; and we also inherited their contagious enthusiasm for participating in the Challenge.

In November 2020, we convened a group of diverse local stakeholders, resident leaders and supportive ecosystem partners to establish the challenge research question. For this community, looking after each other better meant connecting across intergenerational and intercultural lines.

After months of research by UpSocial and UpSocial Canada, the cohort selected three globally recognized programs for pilot in the local community. Post Bellum, and its version of Our Neighbours Stories was one of them. The other two programs were Link Generations and Incredible Edible

We believe these programs can help us to connect with one another and understand each other better.
